The Convention Committee runs the convention. PenguiCon makes a distinction between ConCom, StaffMembers, and ProgramParticipants. This distinction is for what compensation they receive, how much work they do, whether they have a penguicon.org address, and other considerations. This is the social heart of this type of convention. There are conventions that have had this feature for eighty years, and then there are some events that call themselves conventions but don't have it. A GuestLiaison has a very important job. Before the convention, they handle all communications between all of the ConCom departments and their respective GoH. During the convention, they spend a lot of time with their GoH, making sure their GoH makes it to all of their panels on time, eats at regular intervals, and generally has a good time. Traditionally for SF conventions, the Head of Programming had a large scope of tasks which they did or delegated to others. The InventoryWrangler keeps a key to the StorageCube and a list of the stuff in it, gets it to the convention and back, and generally knows more or less who he or she has given it to while it's there. The InventoryWrangler looks for a place to rent a moving truck for a good rate in or around the area of PenguiCon's StorageCube in Farmington. It should be someplace within 10 or 15 miles or so. The InventoryWrangler reserves the truck months in advance.

Unfortunately, for 3.0 in 2005 and for 4.0 in 2006 the LinuxBox was slow to respond to our communication, and we were too understaffed to respond in a timely fashion when they did respond. The Programming Ops person is a part of the programming team on the ConCom who handles the direct operational running of the schedule while at the convention. For instance, this person counts and records the number of attendees at each event, gives a signal to those running the event when they have five-minutes left in their time slot, and makes sure there is water to drink for the panelists during their presentations.

ArsTechnica has volunteered to take an entire room and run tech programming in it 24 hours a day all weekend! This will be in addition to the fantastic software and hardware programming which PenguiCon always runs. Some local fans call the Hilton “the Starship Hilton” because its curving hallways are reminiscent of a set from the starship Enterprise on Star Trek: The Next Generation.
