-More seriously, it is a painless and fun way for newbies to learn the fundamentals of firearms safety, and for them (//and// experienced shooters) to have an opportunity to handle and shoot a variety of handguns in the company of other 'Con attendees.  The cost is minimal (in 2012, the range fee was less than $17, a pistol could be rented from the range for $10 for the afternoon, and ammo was $20ish a box, which could be easily split between several shooters), and the company is excellent.
